Know Your Mission – Quick Guide to Monterey’s Three California Missions

If you’ve lived here for any length of time, you probably know that Monterey’s history is connected with that of the missions in California. At Believe Inn, we’re proud that two of the first three of California’s 21 missions are located here. To get a sense of a history that pre-dates the founding of the U.S., take a tour of Monterey’s three missions.

  • three california missions, california missions, monterey county, monterey's three missionsMission San Carlos Borromeo, established in 1770 in Monterey, was the second Spanish mission founded in California. It was founded in Monterey by Fr. Junipero Serra, but was moved to Carmel in 1771. Now considered one of the most authentically restored Franciscan missions, it is also an active parish. Catholic weddings are also held at the Mission, making this the ideal spot for history buffs to pledge their vows! Call 831-624-1271 for more information, especially if you’d like to know the schedule of Masses.
  • Mission San Antonio de Padua was founded in 1771 in Jolon. This was the third of the California missions and was also founded by Fr. Junipero Serra. Today, it remains an active parish. We at Believe Inn can highly recommend The Padres’ Garden with its glorious roses and fruit trees. We also like Mission Days, an annual event which seeks to recreate a bygone era through re-enactments of the lives of soldiers, artisans and vaqueros. If you’d like more information, call 831-385-4478.
  • Mission Nuestra Senora de la Soledad was built in 1791 and was named for Our Lady of Solitude. This is the 13th California mission and at the time, it was a desolate and remote location. Herds of sheep and cattle were maintained and the mission produced wheat, barley, corn, beans and peas. Today, a copy of the original mission bell hangs near the church entrance and the original is kept inside the church. You can also view the ruins of the mission’s adobe walls. Call 831-678-2586 to learn more about this challenging mission.

For your guests, Believe Inn offers more comfortable accommodations than the Franciscan Fathers could ever have imagined!
