Celebrate the 4th, Sleep at the Aquarium and Have a Reel Good Time!


Mark your calendars, Monterey, because the first week of July will be busy.  Between 4th of July celebrations, a sleepover at the Aquarium and the Scottish Games & Celtic Festival, we at Believe Inn Monterey and Carmel Hill Lodge are wondering how to fit everything in!

A. 4th of July events
Celebrate the 236th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by:

  • Watching a parade at 10 a.m. through downtown Monterey.
  • Enjoying a BBQ in Caledonia Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Pay just $5 for kids and $10 for adults.
  • Tucking into a BBQ beginning at 11 a.m. at City Hall on Pacific Street.  Free admission.
  • Partaking of free food and games at Devendorf Park from noon to 4 p.m.
  • Celebrating the blues and enjoying BBQ, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., at Outdoor Forest Theater in Carmel.
  • Oohing and aahing at the free Patriotic Concert and Laser Light Show at Jacks Ballpark, from 8 p.m. until approximately 9:30 p.m.

B. Summer Night Sleepover, Monterey Bay Aquarium, July 7

The ever popular Summer Nights Sleepovers are back!  Starting at 6 p.m., you can enjoy live music and wine tasting.  The doors close at 8 p.m., allowing you to explore the Aquarium without daytime crowds.  See the new Jellies Experience, visit the updated Ocean Travelers exhibit, and enjoy special programs and a bedtime snack. The evening ends with a late-night nature movie before you go to sleep in front of your favorite exhibit.  Wake up with the fishes and enjoy a continental breakfast.

C. 45th Annual Monterey Scottish Games & Celtic Festival, July 7 & 8

For two glorious days, everyone’s Scottish and Irish in Monterey!  Events at the Monterey County Fairground include athletics, children’s activities, and gatherings of clans, highland dancing and traditional music, whiskey tastings, historical re-enactments and sheep dog demonstrations.  And, of course, there will be plenty of food and vendors on hand.

Get Your Scot On! Great Scot Whiskey Tasting at The Turf Club, June 30


Okay, Monterey, get ready to show your Scots pride!  We at Carmel Hill Lodge have been beyond ourselves ever since news of this event leaked out. We’ve always agreed with Mark Twain’s views on whiskey: “Too much of anything is bad, but too much of good whiskey is barely enough.” If you love Highland single malts, this is the event for you!

great scot whiskey tasting event, the turf club, whiskey tasting eventThe Great Scot Whiskey Tasting will be held on Saturday, June 30, from 7 to 9 p.m., at The Turf Club, Monterey Fairgrounds and Exposition Center. This fabulous evening benefits the Monterey County Fair Heritage Foundation and is a preview to the 45th Annual Monterey Scottish Festival, which will be held on July 7 and 8. A first ever event, it will feature several whiskey tasting stations, including Glenlivet, Hankey Bannister, Balblair Single Malt, Dalmore and Old Pulteney. Old Pulteney, by the way, was awarded World Whisky of the Year in Jim Murray’s 2012 Whisky Bible for its 21-year-old single malt. Oh and there will also be light appetizers for anyone interested in food!

Best Father’s Day Activities – Golfing, Hiking and Eating


Father’s Day is almost here, so we hope you’ve made plans! If not, we at Believe Inn Monterey and Carmel Hill Lodge have some suggestions on great activities for Dad on his special day.

Newly renovated, the two courses have elegant bunkering and graceful greens. Or you could take Dad to Pebble Beach, which has five courses in all (831-622-8723 or http://www.pebblebeach.com) and is the dream destination of any golfer.
  • Maybe Dad wants something more strenuous than a game of golf? He’s in luck! Monterey has wonderful spots for a day hike. Jacks Peak County Park has dramatic views and is a perfect spot for birding (http://www.co.monterey.ca.us/parks/jackspeak.html). Or maybe head to Garrapata State Park, with its gorgeous redwood groves and breathtaking Santa Lucia Mountains (http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=579), or the rock formations and beguiling caves at Pinnacles National Monument. For a tougher hike, try the steep trails at Garland Ranch Regional Park. The great wildlife and panoramic views are well worth the climb!
  • After all that exercise, treat Dad to a great meal! Indulge him at Chart House Restaurant, Monterey (831-372-3362), where he can choose from seafood (Seared Mahi!) or steaks (slow roasted Prime Rib, anyone?) for his dinner. If he’s craving Italian, then the menu at Alberto’s Ristorante (Pacific Grove, (831-373-3993), with classics such as Linguine Pomodoro, should satisfy him. Otherwise, Edgar’s – Quail Lodge in Carmel (831-620-8910; open for lunch and dinner), which supports farms and fisheries, has delights sure to please, like the Tilapia BLT.

Monterey Rock & Rod Festival 6: Music, Cars and Motorcycles!


Yes, Monterey County, it’s that time of year to celebrate rock & roll and custom cars and motorcycles!  We at Believe Inn can’t wait for Monterey Rock & Rod Festival 6 and Best of the West Competitions, from Friday, May 18, to Sunday, May 20, at Monterey County Fairgrounds.  Why are we so thrilled?  Well, who doesn’t love rock & roll and the chance to see hundreds of vintage, custom, classic, hot rod, street rod and muscle cars and trucks?  Add custom and classic motorcycles, competitions for the vehicles and a dance contest, and you have our idea of a great party!

  • Live rock & roll begins with a Sock Hop at 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by a Dance Contest and Silent Auction.
  • Saturday sees the start of the car and motorcycle show and live music rocking the Payton and Local’s Stages all day and night.  Come hear great music from Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals, Terry Sylvester (formerly of the Hollies) and Chicano All-Stars, among others.
  • Sunday offers more great music, more car and motorcycle shows and awards presentations.

There will also be several types of vendors on hand, offering food, specialty items and classic car accessories.
